What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a term used to generalize naturally occurring minerals that were commonly used during construction between the 1930’s to 1980’s. Asbestos exposure can cause a number of critical health concerns and conditions, that is why the removal of asbestos and asbestos building products is mandatory for the health and safety of occupants.

Common Types of Asbestos Include:

  • Chrysotile: Chrysotile is the most common form of asbestos and is frequently found in drywall, insulation & other household materials. Over 90% of all asbestos-containing products contain Chrysotile. Chrysotile fibers are curly and longer than other asbestos types and are easily recognizable.
  • Amosite: Is a form of Asbestos that is commonly used in sprayed coatings, insulation products, and cement. Amosite is considered more toxic than chrysotile. Amosite often appears brown, and the fibers are shorter and straighter.
  • Crocidolite: Crocidolite is a rare form of asbestos and was commonly used in spray coatings, steelwork, fire protection, cement piping & noise insulation. Crocidolite was not heat resistant so it was rarely used for Canadian construction. Crocidolite is blue and considered the most harmful type of asbestos because its fibers are extremely thin and can easily penetrate human lung tissue.
  • Tremolite: Tremolite is a mineral that is commonly found alongside vermiculite insulation Vermiculite came from a mine in Montana and was used in over 35 million homes. Tremolite is most commonly found in attic insulation.
  • Anthophyllite: Anthophyllite is a rare form of asbestos and is uncommon in Canada. It was primarily mined in Finland, but some deposits were mined in North Carolina & Georgia.
  • Actinolite: Actinolite was a commonly used construction mineral that was mixed with vermiculite to make insulation. Actinolite was also used in construction materials such as insulation, drywall, and paint. Actinolite has straight-shaped fibers and is often a darker color
